My Journey to Germany on Behalf of the U.S. Department of State: Empowering Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Introduction: Purpose of the Trip

It was an honor to receive an invitation from the U.S. Department of State to speak in Germany on innovation and entrepreneurship. As an Economic Prosperity Expert, my role was to discuss how cross-cultural collaboration, entrepreneurship, and an abundance mindset can protect and advance democracy while fostering big dreams.

Germany, a leader in technology and innovation, served as the perfect backdrop for this initiative. Throughout my trip, I shared insights on how empowering emerging leaders and young professionals can create opportunities that go beyond borders, creating prosperity for all. My presentations aimed to inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to embrace their dreams and align them with their professional pursuits.

Day 1: Arrival in Frankfurt and Exploring Stuttgart

My journey began with an arrival in Frankfurt, followed by a trip the next day to Stuttgart—a city renowned for its contributions to technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Stuttgart is a central part of Baden-Württemberg’s “The Länd” campaign, an initiative that highlights the region’s leadership in fostering cutting-edge developments across various industries, particularly in the fields of engineering, technology, and digitalization.

This campaign emphasizes the region’s global reach and commitment to being a hub of innovation and progress. Walking through the streets of Stuttgart, I could feel the energy of creativity and advancement—a fitting setting for the discussions that lay ahead.

German-American Friendship Day in Stuttgart

That evening, I was invited to speak at German-American Friendship Day, an annual event celebrated on October 6th to commemorate the long-standing diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between Germany and the United States. The day is a reminder of the strong bond that has existed between the two nations since the post-World War II era, particularly the Marshall Plan, where the U.S. played a key role in helping Germany rebuild its economy. Today, this relationship continues to thrive, focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship, and transatlantic partnerships.

This year’s celebration was hosted by the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg which took place at the breathtaking Neues Schloss, an 18th-century Baroque palace in the heart of Stuttgart. Originally constructed as a royal residence for Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg, the palace symbolizes Stuttgart’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Its grand facades and elegant interiors serve as a contrast to the modernity of the region, now a global leader in technological innovation.

The evening began with opening remarks from State Minister Dr. Florian Stegmann and U.S. Consul General Brian Heath. Their words set the tone for the event, which centered on transatlantic cooperation and the role of entrepreneurship in fostering both innovation and democracy. The event featured musical performances, panel discussions, and personal reflections from young leaders, creating a dynamic atmosphere that bridged the past and future of German-American relations.

During my presentation, I had the opportunity to share insights drawn from Baden-Württemberg’s “The Länd” campaign, particularly a quote that deeply resonated with me: "Be whoever or whatever you like—however you like." This message speaks to the power we each have when we are free to pursue our passions authentically. I emphasized that entrepreneurship is not just about personal success; it’s about using our dreams and ambitions to create a better world. It’s about dreaming bigger—not just for ourselves but for the collective good.

Day 2: Collaboration with the Black Academy and Business Exchange in Reutlingen

The second day of my trip started with a brunch with the Black Academy, an inspiring group committed to fostering excellence and addressing the unique challenges faced by Black Germans. During this gathering, we discussed how to improve the experiences of all Germans, regardless of their background, with a particular focus on the experiences of Black Germans.

Germany, like many countries, has a complex relationship with race. Black Germans navigate a society that can still reflect systemic inequities. Despite these challenges, Black Germans have a growing sense of pride, resilience, and activism. Many are working to reshape the narrative around Blackness in Germany, embracing their heritage while advocating for greater inclusion and representation across all sectors.

One of the key takeaways from this discussion was the importance of visibility and representation. Members of the Black Academy emphasized the need for Black Germans to see themselves in positions of influence, whether in business, education, or media. They also shared stories of both subtle and overt discrimination they had encountered, but the focus of our conversation remained on solutions—how to create spaces of empowerment where young Black Germans can thrive as entrepreneurs, leaders, and innovators.

Later that day, I traveled to Reutlingen, where I delivered a keynote presentation at the Chamber of Commerce on innovation, entrepreneurship, and female empowerment. The questions posed during the Q&A session were thoughtful and insightful, reflecting a deep commitment to fostering innovation.

What struck me most during these interactions on Day 2 was the ambition and determination of the attendees. Their passion and drive inspired me, reaffirming the importance of cross-cultural collaboration and exchange in solving global challenges.

Day 3: Fundraising and Innovation at TechQuartier, Frankfurt

On my final day, I visited TechQuartier in Frankfurt, a hub for startups and tech innovation in Germany. Founded in 2016, TechQuartier (TQ) serves as a gateway to the thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Rhine-Main region. More than just a co-working space, TQ is a platform that connects startups with corporate partners, investors, and mentors, providing resources and networks that foster growth and innovation.

TQ is especially known for hosting accelerators and innovation programs, making it a cornerstone of Frankfurt’s startup community. It attracts entrepreneurs from various industries, particularly in fintech, digitalization, and AI. During my visit, I had the opportunity to attend an informal luncheon during their Fundraising Readiness Week, where I also met with members of the American German Business Club Frankfurt.

Later, we evaluated pitches from two brilliant entrepreneurs, Claudia Rougoor and Louis Balthazar Tartare, whose projects demonstrated the power of AI to transform industries and improve quality of life. The startups we evaluated showcased Germany’s forward-thinking approach to innovation, with ideas that leverage AI for sustainable maintenance and holistic wellness solutions.

The visit to TQ concluded with my presentation on entrepreneurship. I shared insights on shifting from a scarcity to an abundance mindset, which I believe is essential for fostering innovation.

The energy at TechQuartier was electric, and it was clear that Frankfurt is becoming a major player in the global startup ecosystem. TQ’s focus on collaboration, community-building, and providing access to critical resources was a highlight of my visit, and I left with renewed confidence in the power of international partnerships to drive innovation.

Conclusion: The Power of Entrepreneurship and Cross-Cultural Collaboration

Reflecting on my journey to Germany, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to engage in meaningful cross-cultural collaboration. The essence of the German American friendship lies in our commitment to creating prosperity for all by actualizing our personal dreams.

Entrepreneurship is one vehicle for this essence. By fostering innovation, creating jobs, and addressing real-world problems, entrepreneurs play a critical role in upholding democracy. Throughout my discussions with young leaders in Germany, I emphasized the importance of using our talents not only for personal success but for the collective good. My hope is that we all commit to integrating our passions into our work, building businesses that reflect our true selves, and contributing to a more inclusive, equitable, and democratic society.

Together, we can build a more inclusive and prosperous future for everyone through collaboration and innovation. Thank you to the U.S. Consulate General Frankfurt, the U.S. Speaker Program, and the many people who made this tour possible.
